Background of the Study (200 words)
Climate change mitigation is a global imperative, and local communities play a vital role in implementing adaptive strategies. In Okitipupa Local Government Area, Ondo State, women have emerged as significant contributors to environmental management and climate resilience (Adewale, 2023). Their involvement ranges from grassroots mobilization to participation in local decision-making on sustainable practices (Funmi, 2024). Despite their critical contributions, women’s roles in climate change mitigation are frequently undervalued due to prevailing gender stereotypes and exclusionary practices (Yetunde, 2025). The study investigates how gender dynamics influence participation in climate initiatives, highlighting the innovative approaches women employ to address environmental challenges. By integrating local knowledge with contemporary climate policies, the research underscores the importance of gender-sensitive strategies in combating climate change. The discussion situates local practices within the broader national and global context, emphasizing the need for policy frameworks that recognize and support women’s contributions (Babatunde, 2023).
Statement of the Problem (100 words)
In Okitipupa, women’s contributions to climate change mitigation are often overlooked, resulting in inadequate support and recognition. This underrepresentation hampers the effectiveness of local adaptation strategies and reinforces gender disparities in environmental governance (Ireti, 2024). The existing policies fail to integrate women’s unique perspectives and skills, limiting community resilience against climate impacts. This study addresses the need to critically assess the role of women in climate mitigation and propose strategies to enhance their involvement for more sustainable outcomes (Olu, 2025).
